Design for two-storey houses

In a house with an upper floor, the plan is decided on two levels at once. What happens downstairs affects what can be done upstairs, and the staircase, not just the rooms, becomes a central element of the interior.

Ground floor and upper floor zoning

Usually the ground floor holds the day zone and the upper floor the rest area. This is not mandatory: some families prefer a bedroom downstairs. We decide based on the residents’ ages and daily routine.

The staircase and stairwell

The staircase takes up a lot of space and is visible from almost all main rooms. Its materials, lighting and balustrade must be designed together with the rest of the house, not as a separate piece.

  • Which functions sit on each level
  • Bathroom positions so that plumbing stacks sensibly
  • Lighting on the stairs and in hallways
  • Storage at the entrance and upstairs
  • The visual link between living room and garden

Sensibly placed utilities

Bathrooms and technical zones stack where it makes sense.
